Jerry (Jack Black), a junkyard worker is accidentally magnetized in an attempted sabotage of a power plant. When visiting the VHS rental store being run by his friend Mike (Mos Def) all of the VHS tapes are erased by the magnetic field his body is giving off. In desperation to get tapes back on shelves and to avoid disappointing the stores owner (Danny Glover) Jerry and Mike begin making their own versions of popular films.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
Fans of Jack Black movies.
What I Liked About This Movie
I liked the concept of Jerry & Mike making home version of popular movies it has not been done before and really had the opportunity to be a great little film. Some of the parodies they did were inventive and shot very interestingly for a director with great talent. I also don’t mind Jack Black movies and he has some funny scenes in Be Kind Rewind.
What Didn’t Work For Me
I like Mos Def as a rapper and he was solid in The Italian Job but I do not know if Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind) told him to act like he was mentally handicapped or not but that’s how it comes across. I do not mean to offend people with mental disabilities but it seems as though that Mos Def was parodying people with mental disabilities. I honestly thought it was a joke for the first few minutes and when I realized it wasn’t I just did not find him funny for the rest of the movie.

Be Kind Rewind has absolutely no clue what kind of movie it wants to be. At times it is a heartfelt comedy, slapstick affair, drama, and feel good story. As a viewer how am I supposed to latch on to a movie that jumps back and forth so often? Mixing genres can work if done right but Be Kind Rewind feels like it cannot handle all of the genres and just tries to push the viewer to an ending that is such a buzz kill it moots everything that happened throughout the entire movie.
Should You Watch This Movie?
No, Nuff Said.
