Casino Review

Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro) is a gambling handicapper who is given the chance by the Mob to oversee the day-to-day operations at a fictional Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas. Along for the ride is Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci) an enforcer who’s job it is to make sure the mob gets paid and to ensure Ace’s safety in Vegas. All is well for Ace until he meets Ginger (Sharon Stone).

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Viewers looking for a gritty & complex drama will find a lot to love about Casino. Casino weaves in and out between family issues, gangster motifs, & the running of a casino (It is called Casino after all).

What I Liked About This Movie

Two things shine the brightest in this movie: Fantastic cinematography and Sharon Stone. For the record I am a huge fan of almost every Martin Scorsese movie I have seen but in Casino his camera work somehow manages to be better then usual. The use of pans to show the operation of a casino floor and to introduce new characters really gives the movie a shiny Las Vegas feel to it. The Black levels are impressive and when you see the lights of Vegas for the first time the colors really pop off the screen.

You may be asking yourself why is Sharon Stone one of the best things about this movie? Simply put she is the crutch the entire movie relies on to keep it from being “Another Scorsese Gangster Movie”. Her performance could have made or broke this film. Even though personally I have not liked her in anything except Casino her take on a drug addicted weak willed hustler was perfect. The Academy also thought so and nominated her for best actress.

The main actors De Niro & Joe Pesci play their roles exactly how you expect they would and are as good as they were in goodfellas. The inclusion of Don Rickles was also a nice touch and if you do not know who he is when you watch the movie look out for the old bald guy.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Nothing, I personally find Casino extremely engrossing and would easily put it in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. This is my first review on this site and felt I needed to get this review out as soon as possible.

Should You Watch This Movie?

I would definitely recommend you watch this movie. Only caution is that there is a lot of f bombs (422 to be exact) so if you are easily offended by colorful language this is not the movie for you.
