King of Kong Review

Who says video games are only a past time for children? Billy Mitchell & Steve Wiebe would definitely make a convincing argument that they aren’t. King of Kong is a documentary that follows Steve Wiebe as he tries to beat the official Twin Galaxies Donkey Kong record set by “Gamer of the Century” Billy Mitchell. Does that sound boring? Well you obviously have not seen this movie.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Gamers will immediately sink their teeth into this movie from the start. Non gamers who are interested in documentaries showcasing rivalry will also find a lot to like about this movie.

What I Liked About This Movie

The Rivalry. The filmmakers chose two people who completely contrast each other and crafted the perfect David & Goliath movie structure. Throughout the movie they take every chance they can to make the viewer sympathetic towards Steve Wiebe and make you think Billy Mitchell is a douche. The filmmakers even include many scenes with a friend of Billy’s who acts like a henchmen for Billy and he makes the movie very entertaining.

What Didn’t Work For Me

I found the side story of the guy who runs twin galaxies (entity that verifies and keeps track of all classic video game high scores) was slightly under developed. He is not one of the main characters but he was very interesting and I think could have been fleshed out more.

Should You Watch This Movie?

If you are a fan of movies that follow a rivalry between two people I would definitely say this is a must see. If you are a gamer and you have not seen this movie you need to get on that..
