Pans Labyrinth Review

Pans Labyrinth is Directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy 1 &2). The movie follows the story of a young girl in 1944 fascist Spain who along with her pregnant mother moves to the countryside to live with her new stepfather who is a captain in the Spanish army. One night she is lead to an old faun who tells her she must survive three tasks to become a princess.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

I don’t really think I can nail down the audience because the movie is half fantasy half drama.

What I Liked About This Movie

I went into this movie expecting high fantasy with fantastic creatures and on that note the movie delivered. The fantasy world the young girl encounters is absolutely stunning to look at it. The creatures she meets are some of the most interesting on screen creatures I have seen in a long time.

What Didn’t Work For Me

The problem I had is that the fantasy scenes are only half the movie. I wanted to like the real life scenes in which the little girl deals with her terrible surroundings but the fantasy scenes were so incredible that having to go back to grim reality was kind of a downer.

Should You Watch This Movie?

I know this review is shorter then usual but I feel it sums up my feelings on this movie. I think it is definitely one of those movies you either really like or have no connection to.
