Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) buys his first car and with a new friend Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) finds out his car is actually a robot. Shortly after, the leader of the robots Optimus Prime and other transforming robots arrive. Optimus and his group of robots (Called Autobots) tell Sam they are searching for the “AllSpark” a powerful object that a rival group of evil robots (Called Decepticons) is also searching for.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
This movie is targeted to the coveted “no-thinking action junkies” market. Plot and character development are truly not important in this movie. If you like other Michael Bay movies (The Island, The Rock, Armageddon, Bad Boys 1 & 2) then by all means you will like this movie.
What I Liked About This Movie
I feel this movie was robbed of the Oscar for special effects. Yes the robots aren’t on screen for long very often in the movie but when they are it is breathtaking to just stare at the perfect integration of CGI into live action. The action is also top notch, Michael Bay is that dude when it comes to making big loud action scenes and for that I commend him.
What Didn’t Work For Me
After the praise above you would expect I would not have much bad to say about this movie but unfortunately there is so much wrong with this movie. At moments it is borderline insulting to the viewer.

The main issues are the lack of character development & poor dialogue. Interactions between the characters are slightly humorous in some cases then in other scenes are very uninteresting and pointless. Characters seem to have no attachment to each other; the best example would be the side love story between the two leads Shia LaBeouf & Megan Fox. In the beginning of the movie there are no signs of any love connection between them and at the end of the movie they share a moment like they have been in love for years.
Lastly, I find it insulting to the viewer how blatant product placement is in this movie. At one point an Xbox 360 and a Pepsi machine transform into robots. Did I not pay money to see the movie? Advertisement in cinema is fine as long as it is not in your face disrupting the experience you paid for. What happened to the days of movies like Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra. Cobra has is a shoot out scene in a convenience store and a Pepsi sign is in a non essential part of the frame in every third shot of the scene. In Transformers there is a direct shot of a Pepsi machine transforming in the middle of an action scene, should the flow of a movie be stopped for advertising purposes?
Should You Watch This Movie?
Sure, the action scenes & CGI are really purdy but everything else I would just fast forward through.

Just because their’s crappy product placement throughout the movie, that shouldn’t give it a fail!
The action itself should bump it up like crazy - and what about Bernie! Uncle Bobby B baby Uncle Bobby B!
The most frustrating part for me was Shia’s line…”Maybe there’s more to me than meet’s the eye”. I hated that.
