Batman Begins is a re-imagining of the Batman movie franchise. Batman Begins follows the story of how Bruce Wayne(Christian Bale) came to be the man in the mask. But it wouldn’t be a Batman movie without crime fighting and once Bruce dons his mask he begins his rise to become the caped crusader of Gotham City.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like a darker take on the famous Batman character.
What I Liked About This Movie
It was not directed by Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever, Batman & Robin). As a kid I really liked Tim Burtons over the top gothic style Batman but unfortunately Burton had to move on to bigger and better things and the batman was passed of to Joel Schumacher. I was one of those kids who really liked to go see movies on the first night, I saw Batman Forever the first night. I came out of that movie entertained but disappointed that the darker vibes used in the Batman cartoon and previous movies were ditched. Why the long story? Because I want to clearly point out that I applaud Christopher Nolan for bringing back my favorite superhero’s darker side.

The style of Batman Begins is its most notable aspect. Gone are the over the top zany characterizations popularized by the original Batman TV show. In their place are realistic portrayals of psychopaths that cause chaos and a hero with a dark past which constantly shapes his actions. The acting by most of the cast is on point and keeps the movie enjoyable.
Having Batman’s back story fleshed out gives Batman enough depth to open the door for a new series of Batman movies. The focus can now move away from his unpleasant past into the unforeseeable future.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Batman movies are always known for their action scenes. Batman Begins does not handle action as well as Batman movies in the past have. The action does not feel as visceral and in most cases feels like it takes a back seat to the character building.
At pivotal times in this movie the emotion feels too forced. I feel there is a point when you can take dramatic elements too far and Batman Begins does. There is quite a bit of character building in this movie but like every incarnation of Batman the billionaire playboy aspect is never truly developed.
Should You Watch This Movie?
Most definitely. Even though this movie has to carry the burden of setting up a franchise it re-affirms my faith in Batman movies.
