Stuntman Mike(Kurt Russel) is a former stunt driver who likes to kill women with a vehicle he believes is “death proof”. The movie follows two groups of women as they talk about life and have a run in with Stuntman Mike.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
Fans of Quentin Tarantino films (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill).
What I Liked About This Movie
The structure of Death Proof is very interesting because it is splits the story into two parts with each part having a completely different outcome. Most of the actresses are very interesting to listen to and that is a good thing because this is a talky movie.
There is not a lot of action in this movie but the action that is in the movie is awesome. All the car related scenes are all shot nicely and are pretty intense to watch. The final driving scene has a few car stunts that are definitely some of the best I have seen in a long time.

This movie is labeled as a grindhouse movie and rightfully so. Unlike Planet Terror, which I also liked, Death Proof is an homage to 70’s exploitation cinema. The cinematography, editing, & colors are highly reminiscent of the 70’s era. It is interesting to watch all the intentional choices that were made to fit the tone of that era. The ending to Death Proof is perfect and actually made me clap.
What Didn’t Work For Me
The first thing that I felt was off in this movie was Zoe Bell. Zoe Bell appears in the movie as herself. Zoe Bell is a stunt woman in real life and her stunt scene is very good but when she is talking with the other girls on screen she is not as interesting as the other characters.
Being a talky film there are many scenes where the groups of girls are just talking. While interesting I felt their were too many of them and some of them were slightly too long. They slowed the movie down and may detract many people from enjoying this movie.
Should You Watch This Movie?
If you want a slow burning film with big action payoffs I would give Death Proof a watch.
