Now living in Thailand, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) makes his living by capturing snakes and transporting cargo/people with his small boat. One day a group of Christian missionaries approach Rambo to transport them into Burma. The village they are helping gets raided by guerrillas and a mercenary team is sent to save them. Luckily for the mercenaries Rambo tags along.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like their action movies mindless and gory.
What I Liked About This Movie
Sylvester Stallone was a staple in my movie viewing as a kid. When I was younger I would watch every action movie he would appear in. Looking back at his action films Stallone really was something of an anomaly on the action movie scene. In dialogue scenes he lacks charisma but when thrown into an action scene you just can just tell he exudes the macho “I could take anyone in this room” mentality.
Now in his 60’s Stallone goes back to the genre that kept his career going through much of the 90’s. I will admit that I had my doubts that Stallone could still believably pull off an action movie. I was wrong though; even in his 60’s Stallone can still hold his own when it comes to playing the menacing action hero.

The biggest reason to see a Stallone movie is to watch lots of generic bad guys get wiped out in many different ways. Rambo follows this formula to a tee but ramps up the gore levels. The use of excessive blood and body parts getting blown off is incredibly visceral. The action in this movie will not disappoint those looking for their action fix.
What Didn’t Work For Me
One thing dragged down this entire movie for me, the script. I gave this movie a second spin to see if I was just being too hard on it but I realized on second viewing it was actually worse then I initially thought. The Burma genocide conflict is not developed enough to warrant showing the level of violence that is on screen for most of this movie. Under developing the Burma conflict left me feeling like the movie just used the very real conflict as a springboard for action scenes. This was a big issue for me because the movie even shows real life footage at the beginning to drive home the point that this movie is about raising awareness.
Should You Watch This Movie?
Rambo is a move that lends itself well to viewing with others but I would only watch it by yourself if you really need an action fix.
