The Machinist follows the story of a lathe operator named Trevor Reznik(Christian Bale) who is slowly wilting away due to insomnia. Trevor begins seeing a man no one else sees and after a bad accident at work he begins to believe everyone is conspiring against him.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like psychological thrillers.
What I Liked About This Movie
Christian Bale was fantastic in this movie. I truly commend his dedication to his craft by dropping down to a sickly 120 lbs. His physique and ghastly facial features make you feel like he is actually an insomniac. But Bale does not rest on his physique change alone to make the role. He owns the character by underplaying the dialogue with a subtle confused feeling.

The dull color palette chosen for The Machinist creates an atmosphere comparable to what Trevor Reznik’s world must look like. The cinematography backs up the color palette by making the majority of the film feel ominous with plenty of tight and low angle shots.
There is no doubt that this movie is engrossing and will have you by the tail until the end.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Most psychological thrillers have a twist that is not let out till near the end of the movie and makes the whole movie pay off for the viewer. The Machinist follows this mold but I felt the pay off did not clearly wrap up the purpose of a few plot lines and was disappointed with the end result.
Should You Watch This Movie?
The good parts of The Machinist outweigh the ending so I would say it is worth your time to watch this movie.
