Finishing The Game Review

In real life the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee died after having only shot parts of his dream project “Game of Death”. This mockumetary follows the re-casting process of a look alike to stand in for Bruce Lee’s role in the movie.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

What I Liked About This Movie

Mockumentaries are one of the harder genres of movie making to tackle especially if you are setting them in a different time period. After seeing the trailer for this movie a few times it looked like it sold the time period well and most importantly looked funny. Upon finishing the movie I was content in knowing that for once a movie delivered exactly what I was expecting.

Aesthetically the movie looks straight out of the 70’s. Skin tones are orangey, colors are either overblown or under saturated and the clothing looks authentic. For added flair they even added sections of fake movies/television shows that REALLY look the part for the time period.

But you are probably wondering, is it funny? If you like quirky humor that is brought about by uncomfortable situations then you will find parts of this movie absolutely hilarious. Be on the lookout for a few surprising cameos that definitely add a few belly laughs to the movie.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Finishing the Game tries to juggle quite a few different characters and while some of them shine others do not fare so well. The characters that had the most focus on them definitely delivered the best jokes with the secondary characters having to pick up the sloppy seconds. If they had focused solely on the main characters or spread the best jokes between all the characters it would have been a more consistently funny movie.

Movie endings always seem to be the one thing I pick on the most. After some funny scene setups the movie abruptly stops the flow to opt for a jarring ending that leads to one of those “where are they now” montages.

Should You Watch This Movie?

It’s a fun quirky comedy that gave me the feeling that it could be very hit or miss depending on the viewer. I would recommend that you watch the trailer first.
