Happy Gilmore, a wannabe hockey player (Adam Sandler) finds out his grandmother who raised him is being evicted from her home for not paying her taxes. Happy only has a short period of time to raise over $200,000 in order to keep the home from being sold. While movers are moving stuff out of his Grandmothers house he finds out he has the ability to drive a golf ball very far. This new found skill ends up landing him on the PGA tour.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like quirky sports comedies.
What I Liked About This Movie
I think it would be embarrassing if I had a count of how many times I watched this movie when I was younger. Having not seen it in a very long time though the idea of giving Happy Gilmore another watch left me thinking it may disappoint me now that my taste in movies has changed.
So does it hold still up? To put it simply, yes it does. There are so many different characters besides Happy Gilmore that consistently throughout the movie provide big laughs. You got Shooter Mcgavin (Christopher McDonald) the tour leading golfer, Carl Weathers playing a one handed former golfer named Chubbs (hand jokes included), and many others including a cameo by Bob Barker.

I have always wanted to say this; Bob Barker’s cameo in this movie is the best cameo I have ever seen. He is the last person you would ever expect to make a cameo so immensely different then his public persona. Hearing Bob Barker say “Bitch” after totally kicking Sandlers ass was the movie highlight of my childhood.
That last note gives me a nice tween to my next point; there are an endless amount of quotable scenes/phrases throughout the movie. While most movies fail because of the over exposure Happy Gilmore even today is as funny as it was the first time I saw it. Regardless of the direction Sandler took after this movie in my eyes he will always be able to point at Happy Gilmore and say “I can be consistently funny throughout an entire movie”.
What Didn’t Work For Me
The only thing I could possibly complain about this movie is that it will be Adam Sandlers ONLY classic comedy. Sandler was at his comedic prime and since the release of Happy Gilmore he has yet to make anything even close to as funny as this movie.
Should You Watch This Movie?
I know many people will probably disagree with this review but this movie is so highly re-watchable I would love to hear what you could possibly have against it. Before you write me off after reading this review I would recommend viewing other films I have given perfect scores (Casino, 2001: A Space Odyssey).
