This movie picks up moments after the ending to the first movie. Harold (John Cho) & Kumar (Kal Penn) are setting out on a trip to Amsterdam so Harold can surprise a girl he has always had a crush on. Things go wrong on the plane ride to Amsterdam and the duo are thrown in Guantanamo Bay.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like stoner comedies.
What I Liked About This Movie
I have never understood why so many sequels do not start moments after the first one. Thankfully, this movie does away with a bunch of useless story development and picks up moments after the ending to the first film. Starting on an urgent note really helped this movie move along fairly swiftly.

Stoner comedies have been around for a long time yet I still find the breed of comedy they deliver very entertaining. Escape from Guantanamo Bay throws a lot of jokes at the viewer but the hit ratio is commendable. Most of the jokes in this movie are purposefully aimed to offend and I would say they are very successful at offending. The most notable thing though is the credits. Instead of prolonging the movie the exposition plays out during the credits. The bonus is that the exposition is still kind of funny.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Most of this movie involves comedic setups that contain allusions to drugs, sex, or racism. For a stoner movie that structure is completely acceptable but I felt there were too many of them. By spreading such a wide net the movie was not as consistently funny as it could have been.
The Neil Patrick Harris cameo is much larger then in the first movie but while funny it ends on a sour note. Rob Corddry plays an FBI agent trying to hunt down Harold & Kumar and I just did not find any of his scenes very funny. His role in the movie was definitely dragged down by weakly written jokes.
Should You Watch This Movie?
I found it enjoyable.
