The Legend of Drunken Master Review

After returning home from a herbal shopping trip with his father and brother Wong Fei-Hong (Jackie Chan) accidentally gets caught up in a battle with foreigners who are attempting to export precious Chinese artifacts.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of martial arts movies.

What I Liked About This Movie

Jackie Chan can quite simply at this point be called an international legendary movie icon. In The Legend of Drunken Master I would say his star power was shining at brightest with Chan bringing his “A” game to the incredible martial arts scenes. Many action movies feel cheaply staged but I genuinely had no issues with how the fighting scenes were implemented into the movies storyline. There are numerous jaw dropping stunts that mixed in that really mix up the action enough to keep the movie continually fresh throughout.

Not taking the whole affair too seriously helped the movie a lot too. Jackie Chan at one point has to act like he is drunk and although I still feel he does not have much acting range he puts up a hilarious portrayal of a drunken person. As is customary for Jackie Chan movies there are bloopers during the credits that are always entertaining.

What Didn’t Work For Me

It is blatantly obvious that communist Chinese teachings about being the perfect citizen creeped into the movies central themes. The use of alcohol is integral in a fairly important scene of the movie; while it is used entertainingly it is immediately denounced in scene following it. I guess the moral of that section of the movie is to only drink in moderation if you want to be the perfect citizen. That concept of being the perfect citizen is even further exemplified by the dialogue that continually beats you over the head with the idea that Chinese culture must be protected from dangerous foreigners (who in this movie happen to be British).

Should You Watch This Movie?

If you even remotely like martial arts movies you will find a lot to like about this movie. But beware of the copy of the movie you watch because the version I watched was a dubbed version with no option to have subtitles displayed instead.
