What I Liked About This Movie
I can say without hesitation that it is a rare occasion when a Steven Spielberg movie does not provide me with solid entertainment. With that in mind I rented Close Encounters of the Third Kind after not having seen in it in a very long time and not remembering much about it. After viewing it I cannot believe I did not remember much because it is fantastic.
To easily sum up my thoughts on the movie there are two things that I think make it a great movie. The first is Spielberg’s masterful use of lighting to convey an unexplainable yet curiously wondrous mood in many of the movies scenes. Special effects used for the alien ships are mostly conveyed by using bright lighting as opposed to modeled spacecrafts and it is a great effect that still looks good today.

But instead of resting on visual effects alone Spielberg crafted what I feel is the perfect example of keeping the viewer in the dark before the big reveal. While watching I was confused as to where some of the plot points were going and thought they would end up being plot holes. I was wrong of course because at the end everything is revealed in the epic finale.
What Didn’t Work For Me
