From Dusk Till Dawn Review

Two brothers (Quentin Tarantino & George Clooney) rob a bank and along with family they have taken hostage to gain entry into Mexico take refuge at a topless bar that has a deadly secret.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like genre mash ups.

What I Liked About This Movie

When a movie is directed by Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Sin City) with a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown) right off the bat you already know two things are guaranteed to be delivered; stylish camerawork and graphic violence. As you would expect both of those aspect are on full display throughout the movie.

When I first heard about this movie the combination of Clooney and Tarantino as on screen brothers seemed very odd to me. After viewing it I saw the reasoning behind the casting choice which even after seeing the movie many times still feels right. Clooney is vulgar yet has morals while Tarantino has no scruples and looks certifiably crazy in comparison to Clooney’s character. The two also share a few moments of great dialogue together.

Not content with just making a movie about two brothers on the run from the law a complete genre twist is added in the movies final act. This adds a completely different layer too the movie and happens to be my favorite part of the movie to this day. To put the cherry on the top of the awesome sundae that is the movies final act Salma Hayek does a really hot scantily clad dance with a snake.

What Didn’t Work For Me

If you were too look up other reviews of this movie you may see the common theme that the movie falls apart when it makes the genre switch. I would have to respectfully disagree with that sentiment because I happen to like the movies opening scenes and the last section of it. My issue with the structure would be the lagging middle section which in my opinion outstays its welcome. The middle section contains a large chunk of the movies dialogue and considering the screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino it was missing the crispness he usually adds to his characters dialogue.

Why did Cheech Marin appear in the movie as three different characters? If it was a joke I still do not get it.

Should You Watch This Movie?

I have always liked this movie even after re-watching it for this review I still feel it is a movie I would not mind re-watching every once in a while.
