The Color of Money Review

A former pool hustler (Paul Newman) turned liquor salesman named Fast Eddie Felson teaches a young incredibly cocky kid (Tom Cruise) named Vincent the art of hustling people at pool. Along the way Fast Eddie begins to rekindle his love for the game of 9 ball.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like movies about hustling.

What I Liked About This Movie

Pool is a very fun game that I happen to not be very good at (maybe one day) yet I still like to play it. Being a movie centered on pool The Color of Money contains a lot of something I like so naturally it was only a matter of time before I saw it. After watching it I was kicking myself for not knowing until the opening credits it was a movie made by Martin Scorsese (-1 Movie Geek Point) the director of one on my favorite movies Casino.

The Color of Money Photo

Visually the movie is very strong. With solid cinematography during many of the dialogue scenes and some expertly crafted shots during pool play. The level on skill on display even though it is edited to make the actors look better is impressive with the accompanying spot on pool sounds making much of the on screen play seem perfectly authentic.

The two main actors Newman and Cruise play off each other well. Cruise’s seems uncomfortable on camera but it fits his characters mannerism and Newman being a seasoned actor plays it cool with total control over his character. Interaction between the two actors just feels right.

What Didn’t Work For Me

My only quarrel is that initially Vincent does not want to take the risk of going on the road to hustle people yet in one short scene he instantly changes his mind due to a very minor incident with his girlfriend.

Should You Watch This Movie?

I thoroughly enjoyed The Color of Money and would recommend it to anyone who even remotely likes pool.
