8 1/2 Review

Directed by Federico Fellini, 8 ½ is about a movie director who is having trouble trying to complete his plan for his latest movie who continually retreats into his fantasies.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of movies that jump back/forth between dreams and reality.

What I Liked About This Movie

Whether your in the mood for an entertaining romp or a straight forward movie 8 ½ has you covered. For those looking for more depth you could easily give this movie multiple viewings and take away something new each time you watch it.

With a multitude of interestingly distinct characters there is never a dull moment. Many characters are not even fully developed yet they still manage to hold down their screen time well. The main character is by far the most developed (obviously) and he is as cool as ice even though he has a lot of weight on his shoulders.

Drawing a very thin line between fantasy/reality was a smart move on the director’s part. Having both so closely tied together leaves a dream like feeling in every scene. Many times in the movie parallels are drawn between the movie being made in the movie and the movie you are actually watching. It is kind of mind bending if you put some thought into the deliberate clues put forth.

My favorite moment would have to be when while talking about the movie being made in 8 ½ someone says “how can you not care if audiences don’t understand [the movie]”.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Nothing that is worth mentioning in length.

Should You Watch This Movie?

8 ½ is a very interesting movie that any movie fan should check out.
