Directed by Martin Scorsese, Mean Streets is story about a small time gangster (Harvey Keitel) with family connections who tries his hardest to keep his small time hoodlum friend (Robert De Niro) afloat.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
Fans of crime dramas.
What I Liked About This Movie
First and foremost it is good to see the start of Scorsese’s love of making gangster movies. Mean Streets may not be as revered as many of his other movies but it does present a grim/dirty view of New York that is quite captivating.

Casting of the two central characters was utterly perfect. Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro are now considered screen legends at the time of this movie though they were just starting their careers. Whether they are being serious or playful there relationship just clicks in every scene both actors are involved in. Story wise the pacing is rock solid with some interesting encounters and minor characters; culminating in an ending that is very abrupt.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Visually the movie is shot very softly, almost to the point that at times it looks out of focus. At certain points in the movie it is slightly distracting.
Should You Watch This Movie?
I would highly recommend Mean Streets to anyone who even remotely likes crime dramas. If you liked Casino, Goodfellas, or The Departed you will enjoy Mean Streets.
