Two “friends” strangle one of their former classmates to experiment what it feels like to take a life. They then put the body in a chest in the center of the living room. The chest is then used as a serving table for guests at a party who just so happen to be friends/family of the deceased classmate. Unfortunately, one of their guests (James Stewart) suspects something is wrong.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
Fans of tense movies.
What I Liked About This Movie
Before watching Rope I saw many comments about the movie that stated the technical aspects far outweigh the movies proceedings. After my viewing I found that to be the perfect way to sum up Rope. The entire movie is only 10 scenes edited together in such a way that most people may not notice where the edit points are. This structure limits the entire movie to a few rooms. Hitchcock masterfully structured the movie enough to keep the numerous shots fresh even though the space for interactions between characters was very limited.

Hidden through much of the dialogue are numerous double entendres that add depth to the numerous conversations prevalent in the movie. For more depth the relationship between the two killers has sub text which clearly shows that they do have a same sex relationship. This would not be a new concept if it was tackled by today’s directors but back when Rope was made it was definitely unheard of. In fact I would have to say everything about the movies execution was ballsy.
What Didn’t Work For Me
I mentioned above that I liked the concepts/technical aspects behind the movie but my major issue is that it felt way too much like a play (I do not like plays). The fact that it feels like a play makes sense because the movie was based off a play. My major issue with plays is that the dialogue delivery seems highly unrealistic and character reactions always feel forced to me.
If you are a person who likes plays completely disregard the above statement. To those people I would say the only thing you may find is that there is not much action; leaving the movie with a fairly dry mood.
Should You Watch This Movie?
If you like plays or movies with incredible technical aspects it’s worth a look.
