Kung Fu Panda Review

A heavy set panda named Po (voiced by Jack Black) aspires to be a Kung Fu master. After an incident that ends with him becoming his cities chosen warrior he must fight with the deadly Tai Lung. The only problem is that Po does not know Kung Fu.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Young kids.

What I Liked About This Movie

I LOVED the hand drawn style of the opening dream sequence. It starts the movie off fairly epically and features amazingly stylized animation. After the opening scene the first thing you will quite easily notice is that Kung Fu Panda is a very bright and colorful movie. The colors are nice but I liked the fact that they mix in quite a few darker more shadowy scenes to strike a nice balance for your eyes.

Solid balance is not only apparent in the movies style. Kung Fu Panda is very fast moving and sports many great fluid fighting scenes along with some really funny comedy bits. I usually do not like Jack Black’s comedy style but even I have to admit that he does do a great job voicing Po.

What Didn’t Work For Me

My major issue with this movie is that it uses a story arc that has been in many movies before it. The rise of a nobody who does not know how to fight but ends up being “the chosen one” was even used in the movie “Beverly Hills Ninja” which also had a heavy set comedian playing the main character. Every time I watch an animated film there is always one thing that makes no sense that makes me curious. In Kung Fu Panda, Po’s father is a bird and he happens to be the only panda in the city he lives in.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Young kids will definitely enjoy Kung Fu Panda.
