One Hour Photo Review

A one hour photo lab employee (Robin Williams) becomes obsessed with one of his best customers family.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like movies centered on a character that is a bit strange.

What I Liked About This Movie

Robin Williams is a comedian that throughout his career has been very hit or miss. His comedic career has seen some big high points but his non-comedic roles are often overlooked. One role that I feel should have the spotlight shed on it is his portrayal of Sy the Photo Guy in this movie. The first noticeable thing that really makes his character stick out in my mind is the shaved head and sparing use of makeup so his age is on full display. On first look his character looks quite calming but as the movie rolls on we learn more about his twisted inner psyche. Williams plays the character so serious that as we learn more about Sy his creepiness factor continually amps up. Normally you would expect a lot of facial movement from Robin Williams but when he does not use it he can really control a tense scene.

One Hour Photo

I liked the fact the movie rarely moves away from his characters ongoing breakdown since it was the movies sole purpose. The visuals are intentionally bleak with the only bright spots being the photos shown throughout the movie. Beyond that the only thing I would have to say about it is that the running time is perfect.

What Didn’t Work For Me

One Hour Photo starts off by blowing a big part of the movies conclusion. The reveal at the end would have held a lot more weight if was not shown from the onset.

Should You Watch This Movie?

You should see this if only to watch Robin Williams act quite well in a serious role.
