The Hustler Review

A love struck pool hustler named “Fast” Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) ends up needing a financial backer (George C. Scott) in order to defeat a long time champion (Jackie Gleason).

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like to play pool.

What I Liked About This Movie

When you think of naturally cool actors there are a lot that come to mind. In my opinion if you were to make a list of the coolest to ever step in front of a camera Paul Newman would definitely be somewhere around the top of it. He exudes so much confidence and charisma on screen it is ridiculous. The same could also be said about his co-stars who manage to anchor the film perfectly.

The Hustler Photo

I happen to like playing pool so any movie that involves it will get at least a viewing from me. The Hustler’s pool scenes contain fantastic cinematography and every time someone makes a shot it sounds perfect. To sum it up in one word I would say they are “slick”. After watching the movie the first thing I kind of wished I could do was play some pool. Since every character also drinks like their life depends on it I kind of wanted a drink too.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Since the movies best moments involve the actors playing pool that is really what I mainly watched the movie for. The makers of the movie obviously do not share the same feeling because a love story is put in the mix with wavering results. It works on many levels I just wish that it was not featured more prominently then actual the pool playing. The love story really hampered the viewing experience for me.

Should You Watch This Movie?

It is definitely worth watching.
