Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of sci-fi movies that make you think.

What I Liked About This Movie

Like many of the best movies the plot starts off simple then quite quickly begins to get more complicated. In a way Blade Runner is a throwback to the film noir style of moviemaking with the twist being that it’s set in a dystopia like future. This future is definitely not one we all should hope to live in although it is quite interesting to look at. It’s as though every culture and time period has been melted together to form the world Ridley Scott created for this movie.

Blade Runner Photo

Visually the movie is bleakly styled with no hints of anything to make you think that there might be some shining light in the dark void of a society that exists in the world of Blade Runner. The score intentionally offsets this grimy vibe to make the movie seem more like a dream its almost has an ethereal quality to it. Blade Runner’s score happens to be one of the few scores in my music collection.

For the movie watcher who likes to analyze there is a bountiful amount of intricate detail added in every scene that if you feel so inclined could be analyzed to a high degree. All of the moral issues that arise let you decide whether you think the synthetic humans should be treated like normal humans or not. It’s this moral dilemma that adds an increasing amount of weight to the movie every time you view it. After the lengthy confrontation at the end of the movie the conclusion is not spelled out clearly for you and throws in a major revelation that completely changes the movies outlook.

What Didn’t Work For Me

It took me three viewings (spaced very far apart) to really “get it”. Even though I do like it I find that it is paced just a wee bit too slow and on my first viewing I actually fell asleep.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Even though I am labeling it as a classic you may find it boring depending mostly on your tolerance of slower pacing.
