Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder Review

In order to build a giant mini-golf course a planet with an abundance of life is to be destroyed. Members of the planet express crew set out to stop it from being destroyed.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Futurama fans and fans of shows like The Simpsons & Family Guy.

What I Liked About This Movie

The opening sequence used in both the episodes of the show and the movies has been drastically changed to reflect the Las Vegas like setting the story starts in. It was nice to see it changed up a bit and it sets up a clever joke.

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder Photo

No time is wasted in this movie. The story is set off very quickly and most importantly the jokes begin as soon as they possibly can. As you would expect from Futurama there is a good mix of in your face jokes, subtle jokes, and really nerdy jokes. This time around they decided to use Mr.Wong (father of one of the crew members) as a central “villain”. He has appeared in the show a little but it is cool that he finally has a bigger role. I find his voice absolutely hilarious.

One thing I found was the most prominent aspect though was the constant jabs at both feminism and environmentalism. They are two groups that are ripe for joke making and they take any liberties they can to ensure they offend them. It is never in a mean spirited way but it is often quite humorous. Sprinkled in the cast of characters are a few guest voices that add some good pop culture references to the mix. Subtle nods are also made which break the fourth wall from time to time. It is not something you can get away with too often if you can make it work it is a nice touch.

The uber Futurama fans will note that they have finally given the man with the number 9 shirt that appears in many background shots during episodes of the show a speaking role.

What Didn’t Work For Me

If you were to compare all of the Futurama movies released thus far I would have to say it feels the most like they pasted together a few episodes of the show. This leaves the movie feeling a little clunky in its execution. Into the Wild Green yonder makes no attempt to really initiate people in the world of Futurama so for the uninitiated it may be a bit confusing to watch.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Even though it may not stack up against the best episodes of the show the jokes fly by fast and almost always hit the right note. There is no way I could give it a low score.
