Milk (Sean Penn) chronicles the life of a gay activist named Harvey Milk who became California’s first openly gay elected official.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like movies that center on a real person’s life.
What I Liked About This Movie
Milk is the gayest movie I have ever seen. Personally I have no problem with people who are homosexual as long as they do not try to push their lifestyle on me. This movie in no way says people should be gay it simply promotes the notion that those who are should not be ashamed of their life choice. It really is a good message to promote and even if you do not agree with homosexuality you do not have too because the movie does not force you too.

From the start it blows its load quite quickly (joke was there I had to take it). Moment’s later narration from Harvey Milk starts making the quick revelation more poignant. At first I did not think that this ploy would work but upon finishing the movie I found it to be quite effective.
Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Elephant) directed Milk in the past I have had major gripes with his movies. The only other movie of his I hold in a high regard is Good Will Hunting. Milk, however, is much better then any of his other efforts and makes me wonder why he does not continue to make more movies like Milk. Choosing Sean Penn for the role of Milk was risky but he plays a gay man so well you might question if he actually is.
I was mesmerized by the visual style of the movie. It looks as though it was shot on old film stock and even has archival footage from the 70’s cut in where needed. At times you can barely tell the difference between the movies footage and the old footage.
What Didn’t Work For Me
One of the people that is very important to the movies outcome does not have much screen time. The character in question is Dan White a San Francisco supervisor who is on the same committee as Harvey Milk. Josh Brolin is fantastic in the role but I wish his character was developed more.
Should You Watch This Movie?
Unless are overtly homophobic you will find this movie to be an expertly crafted drama.
