Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of movies based off of comic books or graphic novels.

What I Liked About This Movie

I did not read the Watchmen graphic novels before seeing the movie. Part of me expected to be left out in the cold because I did not know much about the source the movie was pulled from. Zack Snyder, however, did manage to make the movie at least somewhat accessible to viewers with no previous knowledge of the Watchmen graphic novels.

Watchmen Photo

The main reason I watched the movie was to see some spectacular special effects and crazy action. In that respect Watchmen succeeds amazingly. CGI has come a long way; Snyder showed he could handle heavy special effects usage in the movie 300 but he pretty much owns its usage in Watchmen. For most of the running time I was in awe at how stunning the movie looked. There is quite a bit of action on display through much of the movie and every time it kicked in it was pretty bad ass. Slow motion is used quite heavily during many of the action scenes. Even though I am not a huge fan of its use I actually think it was used quite effectively.

What Didn’t Work For Me

For the most part I was content with Watchmen. It was not till it began nearing its conclusion that my interest began to fade quite quickly. A movies conclusion can make or break a movie for me and in the case of Watchmen it hampered the experience quite drastically. I assume there was a lot of material from the graphic novel that needed to be covered during the final section of the movie. As it began to wind down (the last 30-40 minutes) the nice brisk pacing of the movie slowly began slipping. I began to start thinking about when it was going to end. When that is what you are thinking during a movie you know that it has completely lost your viewing attention.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Watchmen is a movie you should experience. Even though the ending lessened its impact on me you may feel differently and not find it as much of a problem.

  1. Other than the ending being waaaaayyy too long, I loved it. Would give it a higher score than that imo.
