UP Review

Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) decides to fulfill his lifelong dream of seeing the wilds of South America but instead of flying there he ties a large amount of balloons to the top of his house. Unfortunately a young boy named Russell is on his porch when he sets off and he is forced to take the boy along with him.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Anyone.

What I Liked About This Movie

When going to see it in theatre it was not until I got my ticket ripped that UP was being displayed in 3D. The last time I had seen 3D was at Universal Studios when I was 12 years old. I was amazed at how much it has been improved since then. Anytime an animated movie is in 3D I will be going to see it.

UP Image

UP was very deceptively marketed from the trailers it looks like it is just a story of an old man and a boy going on adventure. From the start you quickly realize there is so much more to it then that. Instead of starting the adventure right off the bat you are treated to an abridged version of Carl’s life. All I will say is that it is very heartbreaking. UP starts a off on a completely different tone then you would expect it to.

As soon as the house lifts off the ground the adventure starts. The chemistry between Russell and Carl works is instant because you can tell there are some qualities in Russell that were once in Carl. What I was worried about was that the movie was hinder on the old man/young boy relationship and use it for all its worth. To my surprise as soon as it was about to wear thin new characters are introduced that drastically change the stories path and the movie gets a reinvigorated. Most importantly UP is supremely entertaining. The emotional, comedic and exciting elements all fit together perfectly.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Since this movie was made with the intention of not just being for kids there are quite a few sad moments. While I thought they were great younger kids may not take to them as well as I did. They are pretty much equivalent to watching Bambi’s mother die. Anyone who saw Bambi when they were a child still remembers that moment.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Definitely. I went to see UP with my mom and she liked it as much as I did I even heard her sniffling a bit during the sad parts.
