Knowing Review

A time capsule is opened at John Koestler’s (Nicolas Cage) son’s school and the item his son receives from it is a piece of paper filled with numbers. John is intrigued by the numbers and finds a disastrous pattern in them.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like disaster movies.

What I Liked About This Movie

As stated above if you like disaster movies you will more then likely enjoy Knowing and ignore its faults. After a somewhat somber lead up the first big disaster of them movie totally slaps you in the face with its sheer rashness. There are a few other big events in the movie that are pretty cool but the first one is the most memorable. Most of the special effects are fairly cheesy looking. In the end though there aesthetics didn’t take away from their impact at all which was kind of surprising.

What anyone who watches this movie will most likely be talking about after seeing it is the ending. Much like the first big moment in the movie the third act moves the movie in a drastically different direction. The shift in plot ends up making the movies ending totaling polarizing. I happened to go along with it so I enjoyed it.

What Didn’t Work For Me

I guess Nicholas Cage’s character in this movie is some kind of super genius because it only takes him two minutes to figure out most of the pattern in the numbers. What really keeps Knowing from being a really good movie is its dramatic elements. From the start it plays up the fact that John is a widow and his son is distant because of his mother’s death. This sub-plot really doesn’t go beyond that and is not given any resolution. Cage’s dramatic scenes, aside from the disasters, felt very awkward. His acting in Knowing is below average.
