A group of scientists doing research in the arctic encounter an alien species that can replicate anything it kills.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
Fans of paranoia filled horror movies.
What I Liked About This Movie
I think I should clarify what I said about the audience for this movie. The Thing is one of those movies that keeps both you and the characters in the movie guessing. Since the alien can perfectly replicate humans it makes for a very paranoid viewing experience. Better yet the ending does not leave you with a clear conclusion. The Thing is infinitely re-watchable because it lets you imagine what happens to the remaining survivors. For the hardcore watchers you can even look for small clues that may support your theories.

What sets The Thing apart from other movies that use a hidden enemy presence though is its perfectly paced setup. Before the real horror elements start kicking in a decent chunk of the movie is spent clearly defining the characters and giving hints of what is about to go down. From a technical perspective The Thing also shines. The heavy use of practical effects leads to some really creepy moments that would not be nearly as effective if they were done with modern CGI. My major gripe with many old horror/thriller movies is the overly dramatic forced music but The Thing has a solid score that is very effective.
It also does not hurt that The Thing has Kurt Russell being fairly bad ass.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Not a thing.
Should You Watch This Movie?
If you are a horror movie fan and you haven’t seen this movie yet you need to watch it as soon as possible. The Thing is John Carpenter’s masterpiece.
