What I Liked About This Movie

Eyes Wide Shut is the last movie legendary director Stanly Kubrick created. Every movie he made was wildly different then last and as a movie fan it is a treat that he ended up making a movie about relationships. Sadly though, he died an untimely death making it bittersweet that Eyes Wide Shut was his last movie because it is obvious he still had a lot of talent left to display.

To put its tone in perspective this movie is fully entrancing. The chemistry between Kidman and Cruise always feels genuine (they were dating at the time) and the situations Cruise ends up in are intensely strange. Watching this movie is like watching an awful dream where nothing is revealed to you until the very end. By using a lot of blue and orange coloring Kubrick ensured you never really connect the movie with any sort of reality.

Its use of nudity deserves to be noted. Nudity in Eyes Wide Shut is never treated like a taboo in fact it is fully embraced. One lengthy scene in particular was even edited upon the movies initial release because of its open use of nudity. Moving past all of that, the issues the movie deals with have a crisp bluntness that really works for me. No other movie I have seen deals with the concept of infidelity so perfectly. Speaking of bluntness the movie has one of my favorite endings ever. From such an esteemed director it was a brash move to have the final line of the movie be the “f word” and have Nicole Kidman deliver it.

What Didn’t Work For Me

In the last act all of the perfectly crafted mystery is explained. Taking out the wonderment of the adventure didn’t really gel with me.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Eyes Wide Shut is an effective movie that really makes you think a lot while you are watching it.
