The owner (Jason Bateman) of an extract plant deals with gluttony of work and relationship issues (Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig).
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like workplace oriented comedies.
What I Liked About This Movie
Bateman may have played a whiny guy with bad luck already on the show Arrested Development (one of my favorites) but I guess the archetype just suits him. When you combine his comedy style with Mike Judge’s (Director/Writer) witty jokes a perfect tone is struck. Bateman and all of the actors don’t force the jokes they just let them roll out at will so it feels like they aren’t trying to be funny they just are.

Not only are the jokes consistent the acting by the supporting cast and the surprises in the movies structure keep it moving along at a good pace. Ben Affleck plays a minor character who really likes taking all kinds of drugs and he plays a pretty good stoner. What surprised me the most casting wise though was a small bit part by Gene Simmons (guy from KISS). He plays a shifty injury lawyer and acts the opposite of his real life persona. He also was lucky enough to get the funniest line in the movie.
What Didn’t Work For Me
Mike Judge needs to find a visual style that works for him. Extract is not a badly shot movie by any means its cinematography is just bland. There are no standout scenes they all kind of just blend together. As the movie started nearing the ending loose ends were wrapped up too perfectly and too quickly to be satisfying. Everything seems to go wrong for every character in the movie so why would it all just work itself out in the end? It was slightly disappointing that it got all sappy at the end.
Should You Watch This Movie?
It has its issues but it is very entertaining.
