Grizzly Man Review

Grizzly man takes a look at the life and death of grizzly bear activist Timothy Treadwell.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like documentaries that chronicle a person’s life.

What I Liked About This Movie

The majority of this movie is comprised of footage actually shot by Timothy himself. My favorite shots were ones that you would only get if you shot hours and hours of video like Timothy did. Manipulation is often the downfall of most documentaries but Grizzly Man does not have that problem. Since any shot with Treadwell in it was in fact shot by him it is what he wanted to show people so we the viewer get a clear picture of who he actually was and how he wanted everyone to see him.

To fill out the movie and flesh it out there are a few interviews with people who knew Treadwell (among others). The number of interviews interwoven into Timothy’s footage is sparse compared to most documentaries but considering the way Grizzly Man is structured there is just enough information shared in them to give a proper back story.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Herzog (director) does take a stance by completely switching up the second half going against the kind hearted grizzly enthusiast motif he clearly establishes. I liked the change up but many of the people who watch this movie will solely judge him by the scenes in the movies second.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Grizzly Man is the type of documentary that has you conversing with others about it almost immediately after you finish it. It is fantastic.
