Star Trek (2009) Review

Star Trek (2009) chronicles the origin story of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the USS Enterprise crew.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

You would think I would say Star Trek fans but Star Trek is actually more of a mainstream action audience movie.

What I Liked About This Movie

Over the years I have tried a few times to see if there was something I was missing by not really liking Star Trek. I always understood it’s almost solely driven by its crisply defined characters but the action and most of the stories did nothing for me. After watching J.J. Abrams vision of Star Trek it is obvious he knew that Star Trek could be taken into a more action oriented direction without sacrificing character development. The cast is very young compared to the original Star Trek cast but they all do a solid job of filling very big shoes. As I hinted at above there is a lot of action in this movie and while incredibly over the top at times it is really exciting to watch.

I am amazed how well Abrams transformed what you could call a “geeky” franchise by giving it a new age makeover to appeal to a wider audience. For the fans of the long running franchise there are plenty of references that will be appreciated.

What Didn’t Work For Me

At times the lens flare effect employed is a little overdone. On the flip side I felt Nero (the bad guy) was a little underdeveloped.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Yes.
