The Invention of Lying Review

One man (Ricky Gervais) gains the ability to lie in a world where everyone is unable to.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

People who like high concept comedies.

What I Liked About This Movie

Ricky Gervais is no stranger to trying comedy concepts that are very different from what I would consider typical (boy meets girl, youth coming of age, etc…). Invention of Lying intrigued me the first time I saw a clip of it. For the most part people never really say what is on their mind and maybe it’s a good thing we don’t because I wouldn’t want to live in the world where everyone says the truth all the time. Gervais is his usual awkwardly funny self. What made the movies funniest scenes for me though was the myriad of cameos.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Although it is very unique the movie tends to fall back on a lot of cliché romantic comedy plot points when it needs to fill in time.

Dramatic moments tend to be too sappy and tossed in at odd moments throwing off any momentum the movie gets. Also, if you start thinking about the world the movie takes place in there are a whole lot of unanswered questions that tear away at its logic. For Example: Why does everyone Gervais’s character interact feel the need to say what is on their mind? They cannot lie but that doesn’t mean they always have to say what is on their minds.

Should You Watch This Movie?

There are funny moments it’s just too bad the movie has a few big issues.
