The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans Review

Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) is a post-Katrina New Orleans detective who is forced to investigate the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. I should probably mention he is also a drug and gambling addict as well.

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of strange movies. I can’t really pinpoint it more then that.

What I Liked About This Movie

I was hesitant when I heard they were making another Bad Lieutenant movie that was not going to follow the original and was going to have Nicholas Cage as the lead. That is until I heard it was going to be directed by Werner Herzog a man who is equally as crazy as this movie is. There are many moments that are so out there that you don’t know whether to laugh or stare confusingly at. I loved the awkwardness it presents you with.

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans Photo

Most police movies either shine the police in a good or evil light. In Port of Call New Orleans the line between the two is never defined due to the main character straddling both sides of it. Nicholas Cage has been in some strong movies and an ass load of duds but in this movie he is amazing. I personally think this is the role he was meant to play a character out of touch with reality and void of any true moral compass. He plays the character so over the top that you don’t want to miss a moment he is on screen.

Even though Cage is the main draw the plotting is what made me fall in love with this movie. Most movies are content with following a straight line and not offending anyone Bad Lieutenant does everything it can to distance itself from every police movie you have ever seen mainly because it doesn’t vilify the bad guy (or troubled good guy depending how you look at the movie). I don’t want to ruin anything but the ending is mystifying.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Any qualms I had while watching the movie were rectified by the end.

Should You Watch This Movie?

It’s definitely not for everyone but if you go with it it’s a very rewarding experience.
