A priest who no longer believes in what he does has a film crew follow him while he performs a fake exorcism on a young girl. Things do not go as planned.
Who is the Audience for This Movie?
People who like documentary style horror movies.
What I Liked About This Movie
The Last Exorcism utilizes the “character holding camera in the scene” style which has become popular as of late. What sets it apart from the others though is its character development and underlying message. A large portion of the movie is spent on ensuring each character has a concise personality with multiple characteristics that make them interesting. Since it is all about looking as real as possible it really helps that they took the time to get you acquainted with the characters so when the scary stuff happens you don’t feel as inclined to start disbelieving what you’re seeing.

One aspect I did not expect to be taken as far as it was is the religion aspect. The satirical scenes with the priest essentially dismantling all the techniques he uses to get people to listen to his message are both funny and a little to close to what some people who practice religion may employ. Of course this is a horror movie so there needs to be some scares there are plenty and I think they did a great job of not making them too over the top. What sold the entire movie for me though are the last 10 minutes; you are tricked into thinking it’s over then BAM you get hit with an insane ending.
What Didn’t Work For Me
There was a bit too much misdirection but not enough to dampen the experience.
Should You Watch This Movie?
Immediately after the movie was over I wanted to watch it again, I would say it’s pretty good.
