Ip Man is a semi-biographical account of a legendary Chinese martial artist (Donne Yen).

Who is the Audience for This Movie?

Fans of martial art movies.

What I Liked About This Movie

I enjoyed almost everything this movie did it just felt right. It drew me in immediately with its sets and backdrops they are very busy (in a good way) and keep the movie firmly rooted in its era. This may be a martial arts movie but the drama on display is incredibly effective it plays on the horrible treatment of the Chinese during World War 2 by the Japanese and is very much about the importance of honor and respect. Ip Man has a great message it just so happens to also have a lot of cool looking action.

Ip Man Photo

I absolutely loved how they dealt with Ip Man when he is fighting. He doesn’t have to try in his fights he is the leagues beyond any master and doesn’t struggle while fighting to make it more dramatic he just flat out kicks everyone’s ass.

What Didn’t Work For Me

Ip Man is way too comical in its opening scenes. Almost immediately after them the movie turns into a drama and the transition is incredibly jarring.

Should You Watch This Movie?

Most definitely.
