The Guard Review

An unpredictable Irish police officer (Brendan Gleeson) is forced to work with an uptight FBI agent (Don Cheadle) who is investigating a drug-smuggling ring.

What I Liked About This Movie

The Guard is one of those movies you don’t hear anything about until you see someone online ranting about why you should see it. That is how I came across it and I will now be that guy as well. I have not seen many Irish movies but from the ones I have seen you need to go into them knowing that both emotion and comedy are played straight emotion isn’t forced and comedy doesn’t stop for laughs. The Guard has tons and tons of small jokes in it that fly by subtly and I found the entire movie hilarious even in its dramatics moments there are small jokes to keep its momentum going.

I would be an awful person if I didn’t credit most of the movies success to Brendan Gleeson his character is incredibly strange and acts unexpectedly in every situation in the movie. From a viewers perspective he keeps you from ever really figuring him out. Even when Don Cheadle enters the picture you still stay more invested in him which is good because Cheadle could have been given more screen time and taken away from the best aspect of the movie. Plot wise, much like the main character, it follows no typical conventions even in its final moments. At 90 minutes its length is perfect as well.

What Didn’t Work For Me

At times it is hard to understand some of the dialogue but its fitting with the setting and characters.
